Yesterday I spent the day with my favorite two-year old, Ms. Satya Pria. Satya was born in early April two years ago. Here's a picture of her now. Pretty gorgeous huh? Well not too surprising because she was born to two beautiful parents, Sarah and Jagadisha.
I remember the day she was born very well. It was a day similar to this -- cool sunny and warm at the same time. Gusty spring mountain breezes waving the daffodils around. I knew Sarah was in labor-- we're good friends and at the time we were also neighbors (which I'm hoping we will be again). I was visualizing her having an easy and joyful experience in her home. About two-thirds of the way through her birthing process, the midwife suggested that she take a walk. So Sarah and Jagadisha bundled up and began the short, but somewhat steep, walk down to my house. Sarah also wanted to soak in my bathtub. They live very simply in a small one-room cabin with no electricity or bathroom. I filled the bath with warm water and a little essential oil, lit candles all around the room, and a placed a vase of daffodils on the back tub ledge (I'm a bath junkie).
Then i stepped outside my front door and watched Sarah and Jagadisha make the slow descent to my house. Every few minutes Sarah would stop, close her eyes, and lean on Jagadisha while she experienced a contraction. I went halfway up to meet them and got to hold Sarah from the back (with Jagadisha in the front -- making a love sandwich!) for several of her contraction experiences. When she came in, i led her to the bathtub and she spent a while in there. In the meantime, i sat in the living room and continued my meditation/visualization of the birth. Afterwards, they walked back up.
I was on pins and needles waiting for the call that the birth had happened. Finally the phone rang and Jagadisha told me the exciting news. Satya Pria had been born! After dashing to the local health food store to pick up a few things they needed, i entered their house and felt the magic. Sarah looked tired and blissful. Jagadisha too. The baby was beautiful. Of course. And i had the great honor of being the first person to greet the baby after Sarah, Jagadisha and the midwives. Satya was maybe an hour old. Wow. A precious new life to behold.
And i love being her auntie and friend. Now Satya is calling me by name. Yesterday she couldn't stop saying my name over and over. Softly, loudly, singing it, in sentences, phrases or just on its own. Lina... and i'd answer back, Satya... Lina... Satya... Lina... (it sweetly echoed what Chris and i do all the time...chrissy...leenie...chrissy...leenie...).
By the way, satya means truth in Sanskrit. Here's a definition from Wikipedia:
The accepted interpretation is "the Truth which equals love." This concept of truth is not merely a synonym of fact or correctness, but is more metaphysical, like the difference between “brain” and “mind.” This 'bigger picture' notion of truth, at least as far as the term Satya is concerned, implies a higher order, a higher principle, a higher knowledge, but not necessarily a higher being or creator. Satya is what one becomes aware of upon becoming a Bodhi (enlightened or awakened person--'Buddha' means awakened one).
I like that. The truth which equals love. More and more, i understand that we create our own truths. So we get to choose the ones that feel good. The ones that feel like love. That are resonant with who we really are. Expressing those truths is a way to expand love. Expand the universe. Yes.
And Ms. Satya is certainly an expression of love and truth. Yesterday we ate oatios with peanut butter and noodles. We petted and played with the cat Mia (formerly my kitty). She taught me Spanish words for body parts. We enjoyed books with beautiful pictures and rhyming words together -- i read them and she provided the soundtrack (especially for all the animals). We danced and sang twinkle twinkle little star. We had a squealing contest. She'd laugh and squeal. And I'd copy her and squeal louder and differently. And she'd do her own squeal back. And we both laughed and laughed. Then she said pee...grass. So wee peed in the grass together.
And we went for a lovely long walk on the first warm beautiful day we've had in a while. We stopped at several points along the river to throw stones in and pick up dead caterpillars. And say hello to chickens and neighbors. And watch a porch being built.
And as we walked, we both quietly sang our own made-up songs -- with words or just sounds. We went at Satya's pace, sometimes walking, sometimes wandering around, sometimes stopping, sometimes running. No sense of time. Endless joyfulness.
I left Satya with a big smile on my face (and hers). I'm so blessed to have her as a friend.
